Frequently asked questions

How does finasteride work?

Finasteride works by inhibiting the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT can shrink hair follicles and shorten the hair growth cycle, resulting in hair loss. By reducing DHT levels, finasteride promotes hair growth and hair thickness.

How does minoxidil work?

Minoxidil solution works by increasing blood flow directly to the scalp, providing more oxygen and nutrients. This encourages your hair follicles to transition from a dormant growth phase to an active growth phase.

How long does DrHair Finasteride Minoxidil Formula take to work?

You’ll generally see results within 3 months, but peak results can take up to 9 months of consistent use. Apply the formula twice a day, every day, to see results as soon as possible

How long does finasteride 1mg take to work?

Finasteride 1mg tablets can take 3-6 months to provide visible results with daily use. The medication reduces the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), leading to lower levels of DHT. Reduced DHT levels are maintained with continuous daily usage of finasteride 1mg. Avoid missing any doses to maintain best results.

Generic finasteride vs branded medication (eg. Propecia)

Brands like Propecia contain the same active ingredient as generic finasteride. Finasteride is the active ingredient in both medications. Drhair may supply and UK licensed generic version of finasteride to patients.

How often should I take finasteride 1mg tablets?

Take one tablet per day for best results. Oral finasteride causes a rapid decrease in dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which combats male-pattern baldness. To maintain low DHT levels, take a tablet once every 24 hours. Missing doses can affect results as DHT levels will not remain as low as possible.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Finasteride 1mg tablets should be taken once every day. If you miss a dose, do not double up on the next dose — continue with one tablet per day. Taking this medication significantly reduces dihydrotestosterone (DHT) levels, but continuous daily dosage is needed to maintain results.

Should I consult a doctor before starting finasteride?

Yes, as hair loss can be caused by a range of medical conditions. A medical professional can evaluate your symptoms and determine whether finasteride is suitable for you or if other treatments should be considered first.

How does azelaic acid work?

Azelaic acid can reduce inflammation and even out skin tone. It also has significant skin-calming effects and helps to improve redness. It decreases pigmentation by inhibiting enzymes that cause hyperpigmentation.

Precautions and advice

Stop taking finasteride and talk to your doctor immediately if you have any of the following symptoms: swelling of your lips, face tongue and throat; difficulty swallowing; lumps under your skin and breathing difficulties.

Patients should be advised to promptly report to their doctor any changes in their breast tissue such as lumps, pain, or nipple discharge as this could be potentially a serious condition, such as breast cancer

You must stop finasteride three months prior to trying to conceive/start a family. if your sexual partner is or may potentially be pregnant, you should avoid exposing her to your semen which could contain a tiny amount of the drug and may affect the normal development of the baby’s sex organs.

Seek immediate medical attention if I experience any adverse events and report them on a Yellowcard.

Some men have reported episodes of depressive illness, and in some cases suicidal thoughts with the use of finasteride if this occurs you must seek a medical appointment/consultation and stop taking finasteride.

Like all medications, DrHair Minoxidil 5% Formula can cause side effects. These usually disappear as your body gets used to the treatment or, failing that, when you stop taking it. Side effects are less likely when minoxidil is used topically because of the low absorption rate (only 1-2%). Greater absorption occurs when skin is inflamed or broken, so in this case, the formula is not recommended.

Unlicensed medication and off-label use:

DrHair Formulas are unlicensed products, therefore it does not currently have a valid UK marketing authorisation.

Unlicensed medicines can be prescribed for ‘off-label’ use. Off-label means that the person prescribing the medicine wants to use it differently from what is specified in its licence. This could mean using the medicine for a different condition or a different group of patients, or it could mean a change in the dose.
