Minoxidil is a vasodilator that helps stimulate hair growth by widening the blood vessels, allowing more nutrients to flow to the hair follicles. It also helps hair follicles transition into the growth phase and promotes thicker hair.
Minoxidil 2.5 mg tablets are currently an unlicensed product for hair loss. Unlicensed medicines can be prescribed for ‘off-label’ use. Off-label means that the person prescribing the medicine wants to use it for a purpose other than the one specified in its licence. This could mean using the medicine for a different condition or a different group of patients, or it could mean a change in the dose.
One Minoxidil 2.5mg tablet should be taken orally once a day. It shouldn’t be taken alongside any other treatments containing minoxidil.
Minoxidil 2.5 mg tablets contain minoxidil, lactose hydrous, microcrystalline cellulose, starch, colloidal silicon dioxide and magnesium stearate.
Generally patients will see results within 3-6 months. It can take up to 9 months of consistent use to see peak results.
Yes, it is possible for oral minoxidil to lower your blood pressure. If you notice any side effects, please discontinue the medication immediately. In the UK, minoxidil tablets are licensed for use in lowering blood pressure.
No, they work differently. Minoxidil increases blood flow to your scalp, providing more oxygen and nutrients, which helps hair follicles transition from a dormant to an active growth phase.
Oral finasteride stops the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT can shrink hair follicles and shorten the hair growth cycle, leading to hair loss. By reducing DHT levels, finasteride promotes hair growth and increases hair thickness.
Every medicine can cause side effects. Side effects related to minoxidil use are usually temporary, and will subside with continued treatment or disappear when treatment is stopped. Please see the patient information leaflet for a full list of possible side effects.
If you experience any of the following, please consult a doctor immediately and stop taking Minoxidil 2.5 mg tablets:
– Feeling light-headed or dizzy
– Feeling wheezy, breathless or tired
– Chest pain
– Fluid retention or swelling in the ankles, feet or hands
The main concern with minoxidil use in pregnancy is its systemic absorption, which could potentially affect the developing foetus. Oral minoxidil is absorbed systemically, so you should avoid taking minoxidil tablets in pregnancy.
It is not recommended to breastfeed while taking oral minoxidil.

Orally taking minoxidil does have the potential to stimulate hair growth in other areas of the body, such as your beard, arms and legs.
